Cooking rice in a rice cooker is one of the simplest ways to cook rice . If a 10 year old is guided even he / she can cook this basic rice . Cooking rice in a rice cooker gives you perfectly cooked rice – just perfect each grain separate , no lumps , no sticky rice .
Today I shall tell you about the long grain Basmati rice which is cooked in a rice cooker . We all have to follow the basics of rinsing and soaking the rice . Once we are done with the 30 minutes of soaking the rice we can cook the rice in a rice cooker . Well if you are short on time you could cook these straight after washing the rice 4-5 times till the water is crystal clear. Soaking helps the rice to be much fluffier and lighter .While cooking any other rice the rice and water ratio will differ. Each quality of rice differs and their water absorption ratio too will differ.
A Rice Cooker is a gadget specially made to cook rice . Most rice cookers have a separate removable bowl , which can be easily washed . After adding the rice and water to this bowl it is placed in the cooker and plugged on . While the rice is cooking you could easily do other jobs without being worried about the rice . It has an auto switch which turns to warm mode once the rice is done . All rice cookers come with a measuring cup .
We have a variety of rice cookers available in the market , and I have always found this method the best for cooking rice . Time and again I have got different rice cookers . While we were in Japan we got a rice cooker from there which has a timer and you can set it up and your rice would get ready at the time you want . It surely is a boon for working class .
My recent rice cooker is a mini rice cooker where I can cook only 1 cup rice . It’s basically for the working class who can easily carry it with rice and then add water and plug it in in the office to enjoy hot steaming rice .
While cooking Basmati rice or any long grained rice we have to follow the rinsing and soaking , and then the rice is cooked with 1;2 ratio . One part rice and two parts water . Adding salt and fat is personal choice .I have added both salt and oil to the rice . Cooking time varies with different rice cookers but whether you cook 1 cup of rice or 4 cups of rice it shall take anywhere between 40 – 50 minutes .
It is interesting that the same gadget can be used to cook Khichadi as well as pulao . While making a pulao , you have to sauté the veggies and rice and then transfer them to the rice cooker and cook just as you would cook any other rice in this cooker . For Khichadi or mushy rice , you need change the ratio of water . It will depend on how soft and mushy you would want your Khichadi to be .
Cooking Rice in a Rice Cooker
1 cup long grained rice
2 cups water
Salt to taste
1 tbsp oil / ghee
Wash the rice very well and soak it for 30 minutes .
Drain the water and add the rice to the rice cooker .
Add water , salt and fat to the rice .
Insert the bowl into the cooker .
Cover the pot and plug in the switch .
Out the rice cooker on cook mode .
Once the rice is cooked it will automatically switch off and turn to warm mode .
Open the rice cooker carefully and check the rice , it would be fluffy , nutty and each grain would be separate .
