Lachko Daal , Rajasthani version

Lachko Daal is a no frill daal . It is a simple boiled daal with just salt and turmeric. As a kid I never liked such daals and found them very inspid , but over a period of time I enjoy this daal coming from Rajasthani Cuisine . Incidentally we have a Kutchi version and a Sindhi version of this daal too. Strange but both the versions taste different from this one and are definitely worth a try .

The lachko daal needs to be blended to get a smooth consistency and though it can be enjoyed with chapati and a drizzle of ghee , I served it with Maad and rice . Maad is a curry made from reserved rice water .This week I am working under Recipes with three ingredients and this daal fits into the theme beautifully, as it has just the Moong Daal as the main ingredient and salt and turmeric as sub ingredients . Lachko Daal was a part of protein rich Rajasthani Thali which I posted for Mega Marathon .

  1. Wow, Vaishali, looking at your thali makes me drool all over again! This is surely a catchy one. We too make a similar one with toor dal that’s part of the Andhra thali, and love how different it tastes when we cook it just for that!

  2. Simple yet delicious dal !!! We too make similar dal with toor dal and call it as “Katti Paruppu”. Even i remember that my gradma have one such wooden masher especially to mash the dal.

  3. Some times we just yearn for very simple food and I’m sure this dal can fit well in that mind set and I can imagine how wonderful it would taste with just the flavor of desi ghee on the top.

  4. First tell me do you have kids? how do you manage to cook so much for thali. If I am able to cook simple dal chawal sabji roti I feel like a won battle :)))))))))
This kind of dal is always my favourite. For Riyanshi I used to make, and always finished licking the bowl..
