Rice & Curry in Banana Leaf Packets

Rice and curry in Banana leaf packets are rice and curry packed in banana leaves , steamed and then served as a complete meal .

Presenting the same food in a unique style is what really impresses me . Today I am presenting Bhuga Chawara with a mattar paneer curry in banana leaf packets . I made rice with some onions and spices , though you can use plain white rice too . I used a paneer curry , but one can use a mix vegetable or any other curry too . You need to cut the leaves into rectangular or square pieces , make sure you roast the leaves on the open flame for a few seconds . This shall make the leaf pliable and it won’t tear while packing . By the way I have to tell you that it was a complete task getting these leaves .

Once we have the leaves ready you can make the packets . I placed the rice , topped it with some curry , some boiled green peas , some fried onion , kasoori methi and finally a whole green chilly . Wrap up the packet by bringing the sides together . If you wish you could tie this packet . Place all the packets in the steamer and steam for 10-15 minutes . While steaming the aroma of the banana leaf and the flavours from the fried onion and kasoori methi are infused and as soon as you open the rice packet you will get a wonderful aroma and a steaming hot individual meal . The green chilly steams up and it’s lovely to bite into it .

Now don’t think that we can serve these packets only with Indian combos , you could make the Thai combo with steamed rice and Thai Yellow Curry / Thai Red Curry ! Mexican Combos with Rice and Curry could be another amazing combo . Go ahead get innovative and make the Rice and Curry in banana leaf packets , just the way I have done for Biryani , Pulao , Khichadi Festival .

  1. Being a south Indian, I am quite familiar with banana leaves being used for steaming stuff or as platters to eat. I can assume how the rice and curry combo must have turned out more flavorful, getting steamed in those leaves.

  2. Fabulous way of cooking in banana leaf, being from south we are used to cook or steam cook in banana leaves. These leaves give very nice flavor to the dish. Good one

  3. Amazing Vaishali. Using banana leaves is a wonderful idea. We get it so easily here. Though I have tried steaming a couple of dishes, never thought of this. The rice would be so flavourful.

  4. This reminds me of our marriage tradition called “kattu saadha koodai”. Basically when the bride goes to the grooms place, brides parents pack whole different variety/mixed rice and pack it in banana leaf and that concept is the kattu saadha koodai. Usually it will be lemon rice, tamarind rice, idli and yogurt rice. 🙂 I would definitely love this curry rice with peas in it. Love the ground paste. Amazing idea.

  5. This is really out of the world idea to present rice and curry this way, awesome Vaishali. Love all the components that have gone in and I am sure I will simply love this. Very innovative!

  6. talk about presenting food 5-star style. !! wow… ! we have idli (from mangalore side) which are steamed in turmeric / jackfruit leaves.. this is such a great idea to serve individual portions and perhaps differntly flavoured..

  7. Steaming the rice and curry with peas in banana leaf must have added so much flavor to it. Love this way of presenting the dish. Superb Idea.

  8. I have to yet cook in a banana leaf and making a rice and a curry in a banana leaf would add flavour as well as the nutrients. Another beautiful share.
