Daal Bhindi

Dal Bhindi is a side dish made with Okra and dal. The dish is very unique with a protein punch. It pairs well with chapati or paratha.

Dal Bhindi is my pick for the alphabet D for the A to Z series where I am posting all Thali Recipes from my drafts. I learnt to cook the Dal Bhindi from our neighbour aunty, who was an excellent cook. Okra tastes awesome in the dish and the dal gives it a lovely crunch, besides it makes a nice and filling dish which is perfect pair with some hot rotis.

Bhindi or Okra is a nutritious veggie with many health benefits. It is low in cholesterol, has anti-cancer properties, is full of iron and magnesium. Well, these are just a few of them, you could read more about them here.

To make Dal Bhindi you must keep a few things in mind, which will help you to get a perfectly delicious side dish. The points to be remembered are –
1. The pigeon pea / toor dal should be soaked at least two hours prior to your cooking time. The cooking time for Okra is less as a result it will not get cooked along with okra, if not soaked.
 2. The okra has to be chopped into fine slices.
3. Make sure you cook the okra with a lid with a rimmed lid, with water in it, which will help in even steam cooking.

Dal Bhindi was a part of the North Indian Thali which was made for the September Mega Marathon where our theme was the Thali and Platter Festival.

  1. This is an interesting recipe. We do with beans, dal and bhendi is a new combinations for me. It sounds delicious and I am going to make a point to try this delicious curry.

  2. I have never made a dry curry with toor dal and this is such an interesting recipe. Bhindi is our favorite vegetable and I really want to make this recipe. So the toor dal cooks in the short time?

  3. This is an interesting combination of bhindi and dal and looks so flavorful. I am going to try this out soon.

  4. We add toor dal to some curries but not okra. We prefer crisp okra and so usually I end up preparing that most of the times. This version is interesting and flavorful.
