How to cook Perfect Basmati Rice in a Microwave

Cooking perfect basmati rice in a microwave is really simple and it gives you well cooked rice where each grain of rice is separate . This is a quick method to cook rice.

With Biryani , Pulao , Khichadi Festival cooking rice in a Microwave is yet another basic recipe . To tell you the truth this was a learning process . I had never cooked rice in a microwave ! I must have seen umpteen videos , and read recipes on it – each one different ! After trying a couple of recipes , I realised this recipe where we use 1:2 ratio works best .

In a normal day to day life I used to cook rice in a Rice Cooker , sometimes I use the Absorption Method . The Pressure Cooker Method is mostly for Khichadis , though it’s the fastest to cook rice . Microwave cooking is rare but I realised how effortless and with great results ! You can even serve in the same bowl . I am sure it’s perfect for bachelors as well as students who have to cook by themselves . In fact I told Juhi about it and she was so happy to learn this effortless method to cook rice .

My recent cooking for rice has changed and I use the a big pot of water to boil the rice , cook rice till done and then discard the starchy water . This method is similar to How to cook perfect rice for Biryani , just that for Biryani we add whole spices and discard the water when the rice is 80% cooked . Once the water is drained one can reheat the rice on steam and it’s as good as fresh rice .

Anyways I loved the rice cooked in Microwave and this rice also requires rinsing and soaking at least 30 minutes prior to cooking . Rice and water ratio is 1:2 . One needs to use a microwave safe bowl , most important to cover the bowl while the rice is cooking . The microwave has to be on High Power and we need 10 minutes to cook 1 cup rice . After 10 minutes remove the bowl , let stand covered for another 10 minutes . Now you can serve the rice . I served these with Mag in Chutti Daal , Fajeto and Gujrati Marcha Bateka nu shaak .

  1. Again a good tutorial on how to cook rice. I have a microwave rice cooker and so never tried cooking n a bowl. I don’t use Basmati rice refgularly but use sona masuri. I know you are talking about Basmati but just wanted to add if anyone is interested that sona masuri kind of rice doesn’t need prior soaking and 1:2 ratio of water is not needed as well.
