Tofu is made of curdled soy milk, pressed into blocks in a process similar to making cottage cheese. It is a good source of protein and a staple of Japanese cuisine. Tofu is an especially important ingredient in vegetarian Buddhist temple cuisine . It has a delicate taste and is a versatile food that can be used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.

Some of the popular tofu varieties that are available in Japan are soft tofu, firm tofu, deep fried tofu, freeze dried tofu and fermented tofu.

While tasting a few of these I did not like all varieties. The soft tofu is what I liked, so while making the sesame fried tofu I used soft tofu .I made a batter and  after dipping them into  this batter rolled them into sesame seeds and panko which are Japanese bread crumbs. This makes the tofu much more crisper.Japanese would call this Furai ,the texture of these bread crumbs is different, just like what you see on those nuggets.

Sesame Fried Tofu

1 block tofu , cut into cubes
1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
Salt to taste
1 tsp black sesame seeds
2 tb sp bread crumb flakes
Combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
Add water to make thick batter.
Dip each tofu cube in the batter and then roll in the flakes and sesame seeds.
Deep fry to a golden.
I got the bread crumb flakes from Japan, but you could use corn flakes too.

Shoyu Dipping Sauce
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 1/2 cups water
1 tb sp vinegar
Salt to taste
1 tbsp sugar
Minced ginger with a few drops of lemon.

Mix everything and use as a sauce for dipping Tempura and Fried Tofu.

I served this tofu along with Kari Raisu, Tempura, Yasai Salad as a  Japanese Meal .

  1. I am not a big fan of tofu and I usually get extra firm or firm tofu for Indian recipes and cook it very well . Nice presentation and fried tofu looks good. I think I might like this fried tofu
