O - Onion Samosas

Onion samosas are a bite sized savoury snack which are filled with onions in a crisp flaky pastry. These are also popular as Irani Samosas and are a popular street food from the royal city of Hyderabad .

Samosas originated in the Middle East where they were called Sambusak and were brought to India in the thirteenth century . If you Explore the Flavors of Street Food you will observe that Samosas are a popular snack all over the country , though each state has its own variety . We have different stuffings for these samosas the potato and peas being the most popular . We also get samosas in different sizes , the Punjabi samosas are nice and big , unlike the onion samosas which are quite small .

Hyderabad is very popular for these onion samosas . The onions are sliced and a little flattened rice is added to it to absorb the juices from onions which is oozed out after adding salt and spices . The stuffing is tucked into a mini cone made from all purpose flour . I used ready made samosa sheets , but one can make these sheets at home too , these are then fried to a crisp golden .

The onion samosas are normally sold by vendors moving from one place to the other on bicycles . These are sold in sets of five samosas and priced at RS 5 . Of course these are also available in restaurants and Irani cafes along with chai or tea . It is interesting to know that the onion samosas are also called Patti samosas and Chota Samosas . Patti Samosas because they are made from patti which is sheets . Chota Samosas because they are small . The other variety of stuffings are keema , corn and daal .

I have already posted some samosa variations which you could check
