How to make a Basic Indian Khichadi

Khichadi is a porridge kind of mish mash prepared with rice and lentils . Here rice can be replaced with other grains too . It is pure comfort food!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup split green gram
  • 3 cups water
  • Pinch turmeric powder
  • Pinch asafoetida
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee / butter / oil

Instructions

  • Mix equal portions of rice and daal .
  • Wash well till the water is crystal clear .
  • Soak for 15 - 30 minutes .
  • Add 3 cups water to a pressure cooker .
  • Add the soaked rice daal .
  • Add salt , pinch turmeric and pinch asafoetida .
  • Close the pressure cooker and cook for two whistles .
  • Simmer the gas and let cook for 5-7 minutes .
  • Switch off the gas .
  • Open the cooker only after the pressure is released .
  • Add ghee and give a few quick stirs .
  • Serve hot .
