For Day 2 under Special Themes I am posting recipes from my Andhra Thali. Yesterday it was Nutty Karela Crisps. For today I have a delicious curry with drumsticks.
We all know that drumsticks are loaded with healthy proteins and essential minerals making it a healthy food. Being high in calcium, iron and other vitamins, drumsticks help in strengthening bones.They help to lower the blood sugar level , eases respiratory problems. Also ,they are very good for pregnant ladies .
Today’s drumstick curry is a rich curry with cashew and poppy seed gravy . Serve it either with rice or chapati , though I like to eat a bowl of this without any accompaniment.
Munnakkaya Masala Kura
Ingredients
2 drumsticks, cut into 2″ pieces
2 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
Few curry leaves
1 onion, finely chopped
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilly powder
Salt to taste
Paste
10-12 cashews
6 cloves garlic
1 tbsp coconut , grated
1 tsp poppy seeds
Water as required for making the paste
Method
Heat oil . Add cumin seeds and curry leaves .
Add onion and sauté till light brown .
Add the drumsticks, turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt and one cup water.
Cover and cook till the drumsticks are 50% tender.
Add the prepared paste and half cup water .
Mix well and cook till the drumsticks are done .

Hubby and I both love drumsticks and I usually prepare it in a yogurt and besan gravy. Like your preparation with coconut and cashew nuts.
Since drumsticks are not available here in Punjab, I have never tasted/cooked drumsticks except in a sambar. this creamy drumstick curry must be delicious.
We use drumstick in almost every gravy in our home and love the flavor it brings to the curry. But never tried this kind of masala with drumstick, interesting recipe. Must to try.
