How to cook Perfect Rice in a Pressure Cooker

Cooking rice in a pressure cooker is one of the fastest ways to cook rice . The rice is cooked within minutes and you have a wonderful steaming pot of rice to enjoy with your curries and dals .

Pressure Cookers sure are a boon in today’s busy lives . We can cook just about anything in these cookers within minutes . I might be having at least 5-6 pressure cookers of various sizes as I find them the best for cooking .

When cooking rice in a Pressure Cooker, there are two ways one can cook this rice . In the first method one has to add rice , water , salt and fat right into the pressure cooker , but in the second method one adds water to the cooker and then puts rice , water , salt and fat into another container which is then put in the pressure cooker . Here in Gujrat this method is very popular , they use three containers , one for rice , the other for dal and the third one for veggies . I have cooked the rice directly in the pressure cooker .

When we cook any rice we need to follow the basics of rice – basics of rinsing and soaking the rice . So here I have rinsed and soaked the rice for 30 minutes and then put them in the pressure cooker . I added 1 cup rice and added 1 3/4 cups of water along with some salt and oil . As soon as the water starts to boil fix the lid along with the whistle. Cook on full flame , and after two whistle switch off the flame . Let the pressure drop completely , open the cooker and the rice would be perfectly cooked . Each grain would be well cooked and separate .

The same method can be used to cook pulaos . One can sauté veggies with rice , add all spices and herbs and cook exactly in the similar manner . You will see that you get a wonderful pulao in minutes .

I have cooked Basmati Rice here in a Pressure Cooker , but you can cook any rice . All you need to do is change the water ratio and cooking time . I recently made Matta Rice from Kerala and I had to cook them for 4 whistles ! Since I use only Basmati Rice I have shared the recipe for it . Even while cooking Basmati one has to remember that cooking time varies according to the quality of rice and the speed of gas burners .

Even though the Pressure Cooked Rice is faster to cook , I normally cook rice either in a Rice Cooker or with the Absorption Method . Wonder why ? Perhaps every individual has their own style and their own preferences where cooking utensils are concerned .

Anyways let’s see how this rice is prepared . I served this rice along with Vegetable Kofta and some Bhindi Masala .

  1. Rice looks very perfectly made. When we were kids, my mother would use the cooker to make rice, dal and vegetable at once like you mentioned since she would cook lunch and breakfast by 7 am. Now she uses two small prsssure cookers. My electric rice cooker always sits in the storage area. To me, pressure cooker or the microwave rice cooker works best.

  2. I am always scared of making basmati rice in pressure cooker because I worry it becomes mushy. But after reading your post, I think I can gather the courage to try it now. Fab series!!

  3. The pressure cooker is really a boon. I too have three inserts for my 10-liter pressure cooker and I cook dal, rice, and veggies at the same time as you mentioned. Ahhh, tell me about matta rice. I went with 5 whistles. 🙂 For basmati, I just go with one whistle and also less water. I don’t if it’s the rice variety that I get here, but more than one whistle makes it sticky. For sona masoori, I go with three whistles. Back in my native, we get rice directly from the farm owners and they say old rice is non-sticky and also gives good volume whereas new rice will be sticky. Good old basics. 🙂

  4. I have never cooked basmati rice in pressure cooker. Growing up , there was never basmati rice at home. Even to this day my mom uses her pressure cooker to cook dal, rice and veggies all at once. A very tempting platter.

  5. I usually stay away from pressure cooker while cooking basmati as I always end up with mushy rice. Only twice I got perfect results but still I prefer the open pan method. The rice has turned out so perfect. Next time I will take your advice while cooking in cooker.

  6. this is my MOST preferred method to cook rice ! I too add a hint of oil and salt and fluff them up once pressure is released . that curry set up in the last pic is so inviting !

  7. Another useful posts for those who end up making sticky rice in pressure cooker. Love your pics and the way you have explained everything in detail.
