Qubani ka Meetha is a traditional dessert from the city of Hyderabad . The dessert is made with dried apricots and served with fresh cream .
The alphabet Q brings us to Hyderabad , and Qubani ka Meetha . I know many of you might be thinking that this is a gourmet dessert , so how come it is classified under Street Food ? Well while I was Exploring the Flavours of Street Food I read that this dessert is served on the streets during Ramadan . There is such a big variety of food served during Ramadan , it is a treat to see and read about it . After reading about Ramadan Recipes I seriously want to make many more desserts , they sound so interesting , but for now it’s Qubani ka Meetha .
The dessert is simple and very quick to prepare . You just need two ingredients ! Apricots and sugar . In the market we see two varieties of dried apricots . One where the apricots are whole with a kernel inside , these are lighter in colour . The second variety is where the apricots are large and the kernel is removed for drying . They are treated with sulphur dioxide which gives them this vibrant colour . Normally the first variety is used to make the qubani ka meetha .
Apricots are soaked overnight , the kernels are removed , but mind you these kernels have a tiny almond inside , which are blanched and used for garnish .Now these almonds are sweet but at times they are very very bitter ! I remember as a kid I loved to suck this kernel after finishing the apricot , it tasted sweet for a while and then I would break the kernel with teeth and enjoy the almond . But guys beware do not break the kernels with teeth , it could leave you with damaged teeth .
After we have soaked these overnight and removed the kernel we just need to boil them with sugar , we use the same water in which they had been soaked . After cooking half the pulp is puréed in a blender and mixed . And that’s it . We are ready with this dessert .
I made this dessert and piped some cream . After clicking pics , I enjoyed a bowl of it . Later in the evening , I served the dessert with custard and vanilla ice cream . To be truthful I enjoyed it with ice cream , while hubby liked it with custard . So once the Qubani ka Meetha is made you have multiple options of serving .
