Indonesians use a lot of tofu in their food and while cooking a meal from this country I decided to make stuffed tofu which is a very common snack on The Indonesian streets. These are called Tahu Isi.
The recipe that I found had tofu which was slit and stuffed, but I used these ready pockets . But of course you could use a tofu block or a paneer block.
Tahu Isi – Indonesian Stuffed Tofu Parcels
2 blocks of firm tofu/ paneer
½ cup beansprouts
½ cup carrots, diced
½ cup green cabbage, thinly chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch knob ginger, chopped
1 scallion, chopped
1 tsp pepper
salt to taste
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp corn starch
¾ cup water
Salt to taste
In a wok or saucepan, sauté the sprouts, carrots, cabbage, garlic, ginger, scallion, pepper and salt until they are translucent.
Set aside and allow to cool.
With a spoon, gently stuff each tofu pocket with vegetables, trying not to break the parcel.
In case you are using tofu or paneer then proceeded as follows
Cut the block of tofu in half, so that you have 2 squares. Slice through the middle, but not all the way, so that you can open the tofu like a bun.
Gently place the tofu in hot oil so that the outside becomes golden. Remove and set aside. This will make the tofu rigid and a lot easier to work with.
In a separate bowl, mix flour, starch water and turmeric to form a yellow batter. Gently coat each tofu in the liquid batter, making sure that the exposed vegetables are well coated (or else they will fall out in the oil). Return the tofu to the oil and deep fry until golden brown. Serve with hot sauce!
Nice filling for the pockets. Tofu pockets are scrumptious!
Very interesting recipe. Wish it was not deep fried. I wonder if it could be baked instead.
looks so appetising, i want to eat it right away…i am wary with tofu but wont mind trying it myself
So tempting.. I love tofu pockets, they are so versatile and can be used in 1000 different ways. I'm in love with the Indonesian flavors that went in there.
Tofu pockets are looking delicious . Nice choice..
Looks yum but like you we are wary of tofu. Will try with small portion of paneer.
I remember seeing something similar as a street food in China though the filling was pork based. Your filling sounds so yum Vaishali…
very appetising for Tofu lovers 🙂
The filling looks very interesting!!! but i m afraid people @ home are not ready for the taste of tofu yet!! May be i can try with paneer!!!
