Amla Candy is a healthy , nutritious candy prepared with gooseberries . These are a powerhouse of vitamin C and can be stored for a long time .
My this week’s theme is Candies come in Different Shapes.
I have always visualized Candies as those hard sugar based sweets, and nothing beyond that. When Valli announced that theme I read about the Candies. Here is what Wiki says about Candies-
Candy, also called sweets or lollies, is a confection that features sugar as a principal ingredient. The category, called sugar confectionery, encompasses any sweet confection, including chocolate, chewing gum, and sugar candy. Vegetables, fruit, or nuts which have been glazed and coated with sugar are said to be candied.
I was surprised to see the variations that we have. There is a complete list of Candies , A list which is worth reading, Check here. By chance I had my all three candy recipes in my drafts , I was happy , but at the same time I am now wanting to make some candies that I have read about.
Amla is a very good source of vitamin C and the best is that the vitamin in these remains intact even after cooking . They strengthen the digestive systems and increase the resistance power of the body . They help in curing any kind of cold and cough too .
Amla can be eaten fresh, though the bitter taste is better offset with a sprinkle of salt. To rid the berries of their bitter flavor, these are soaked tin salt water. The water is changed for 2-3 days and then the fruit is ready to eat .
My girls have always been very fond of these soaked Amlas , they would buy these from the vendor outside their school . The soaked fruit is a treat by itself , but the Amla Candy is a step higher . These taste is just awesome and the candy can be stored for long . Mom always stocked these , and would enjoy these regularly .
I made these Candy’s long time back and they were really appreciated . It surely is a work of patience but definitely worth the effort .

I am not an amla person at all, but I remember chewing these when small. My grandma used to stock this and give them to us to have when we feel fidgety… miss them now, got to check if I can find them or maybe make a small batch for myself…

I too hadn’t realized the length and breadth of the candy world until I made some as part of daring bakers longtime back. It’s astonishing to see the varieties and never having thought them before as candies. Love your amla candy and the thought of amla sharbat makes my mouth water!
